How to Read a Taobao or 1688 Listing (With Chinese Terms)

What are the main parts of a Taobao or 1688 listing?

Both platforms lay out a listing in roughly the same blocks, top to bottom:

• Title and photos. The title is a string of search keywords, not a description. The photos are often supplied by the factory and shared by many sellers.
• Price. On Taobao, a single retail price, sometimes with a coupon (优惠券, yōuhuìquàn). On 1688, a quantity table with the minimum order marked 起批.
• Variant selector. Colour, size, version, plug and bundle choices.
• Shipping line. Where it ships from, the domestic shipping cost or 包邮, and dispatch time.
• Details and specs. On Taobao, 详情 (xiángqíng), product details. On both, a parameter table with brand, model, material and dimensions.
• Reviews. 评价 (píngjià), with monthly sales 月销 (yuèxiāo) shown near the price on Taobao.
• Shop information. Store rating, age, response time and, on 1688, membership years and badges.

How do variants and SKUs work?

The variant selector is usually labelled 颜色分类 (yánsè fēnlèi), literally "colour category", even when it lists models, bundles or plug types. Sizes for clothes and shoes appear under 尺码 (chǐmǎ). Each combination you can pick, such as black plus size 42, is a separate SKU with its own price and its own stock count. Developers who work with 1688 data describe colour and size as nested specifications for exactly this reason.

Two things follow from that. First, the price under the title is often the cheapest SKU, which may be a bare version with no charger or a tiny size. Second, one variant can be in stock while another is not. Always select the variant you want and then read the price and stock.

Why does the price change when you pick a variant?

Because sellers list very different things under one page. Common patterns:

• A "main unit only" SKU at the advertised price, and the usable version with cable, charger or case at a higher one.
• Several quality grades of the same-looking item, from a basic version to a better one, priced in steps.
• Different plug or regional versions. For anything electrical, look for the plug type in the variant name.
• A clearance colour priced low to pull the listing up in search.

Translate the variant names one by one (highlight, right-click, translate selection in Chrome). Variant names are short, so machine translation handles them better than the title. If two variants translate to the same English words, compare their photos and prices, and ask the seller which one is which before choosing. Write down the exact Chinese variant name as well as your translation. When you pass the link to anyone buying for you, the Chinese name is what removes any doubt about which option you meant.

Where are the specs, and what should you read there?

The parameter table, often headed 规格参数 or simply 参数 (cānshù, parameters), sits under the details tab. This is the most reliable text on the page, because it is filled from fixed fields rather than written as marketing. Read:

• Brand (品牌, pǐnpái) and model. If the brand field says something different from the title, believe the field.
• Material. Especially for clothes, bags and kitchen items.
• Dimensions and weight. These decide whether it fits and what it costs to ship by air.
• Voltage and plug for anything with a cable. China runs at 220V 50Hz like Pakistan, but plug shapes differ.

Below the parameter table, the long details section is mostly images with text baked in. Use Google Lens or a screenshot translator to read those, especially size charts and what is in the box.

How do you judge the seller?

On Taobao, look at the overall store rating, how long the store has existed, its response time, and the review count against monthly sales. A store selling thousands a month with only a few reviews is unusual.

On Tmall (天猫, Tiān Māo), which shares the Taobao app, the stores are run by brand owners or authorised distributors, so a Tmall 官方旗舰店 (guānfāng qíjiàndiàn), official flagship store, is the safest place to buy a branded item.

On 1688, check the 诚信通 membership years (a paid membership, so it shows staying power rather than quality), whether the seller has the stricter 实力商家 badge, any 超级工厂 factory label, and the 回头率, the share of buyers who order again. What does the shipping origin tell you?

The shipping line shows 发货地 (fāhuò dì), the place it ships from, usually a province and city. It matters for two reasons:

• Speed to the agent's warehouse. Most mainland deliveries take one to three days, a little longer from remote provinces. That time comes before the international leg even starts.
• Comparing listings. When several shops sell the same item, a seller shipping from the same city as most others with a long sales history is a safer pick than an outlier with no history.

包邮 (bāoyóu) on that line means shipping is included, but only within mainland China. International shipping is always separate.

How do you read the reviews?

Go straight to the negative reviews (差评). Chinese buyers are blunt, and the complaints tell you what actually fails: a strap that snaps, a battery that drains, sizes that run small. Look for buyer photos, which show the real colour and finish. Ignore one-line five-star reviews.

Watch for two warning signs: reviews that describe a different product (the listing was reused), and monthly sales far out of line with the number of reviews. On 1688, wholesale buyers leave fewer reviews, so lean more on membership years, badges and 回头率.

Reviews also answer questions the listing avoids. Search the review text with your browser's find function for words like the size you want, the plug type or battery. If several buyers mention the same problem with the variant you picked, choose a different variant or a different seller.

What do the order status words mean after you buy?

If you buy through an agent, you will often get screenshots or tracking updates in Chinese. These are the common order stages on Taobao:

• 待发货 (dài fāhuò): paid, waiting for the seller to dispatch.
• 已发货 (yǐ fāhuò): dispatched by the seller.
• 运输中 (yùnshū zhōng): in transit inside China.
• 派送中 (pàisòng zhōng): out for delivery, here meaning to the agent's warehouse.
• 已签收 (yǐ qiānshōu): delivered and signed for.

You may also see 运费险 (yùnfèixiǎn), shipping insurance, which covers return postage for domestic Chinese buyers. It does not help once the item has left China. If a listing shows 客服 (kèfú), that is the customer service chat, which is where an agent would ask the seller questions on your behalf.

Check a listing in five minutes, step by step

1. Translate the page in Chrome.
2. Select the exact variant and note its price and stock (现货 or 预售).
3. Read the parameter table: brand, model, material, dimensions, voltage.
4. Check the shipping origin and dispatch time.
5. Check the seller: rating, age and, on 1688, membership years and badges.
6. Read ten negative reviews and look at buyer photos.
7. Take a screenshot of the variant, price and specs, then copy the link.

Common mistakes when reading a listing

• Quoting the headline price without selecting the variant.
• Missing 预售. A pre-sale item can take weeks to dispatch. Sellers sometimes switch an item from 现货 to 预售 after you order.
• Treating 正品 as proof. Anyone can type "genuine". Only an official flagship store or the brand's own channel backs it.
• Assuming 7-day returns work from Pakistan. 7天无理由退货 is a Taobao return option that works inside China. Once the item has left China, it is not a practical route.
