Can I Import a Laptop From China to Pakistan? Duty, Warranty, Keyboard

By importfromchina.shop teamUpdated October 3, 20267 min read
Quick answer

Yes. A single laptop can be imported from China to Pakistan by air because its lithium battery is built in, and laptops do not need PTA registration. You pay customs duty and taxes on the landed value, the brand warranty is usually valid in China only, and China-market models often ship with a Chinese single-language edition of Windows. Check the Windows edition, keyboard and exact spec before you pay.

Can one laptop be imported from China to Pakistan?

Yes, and it is one of the more straightforward single-item imports. A laptop is a device with a built-in lithium battery, which air carriers accept under normal rules. It is not a phone, so PTA does not come into it. It is not on any restricted list. The three things that decide whether it is a good idea are the customs cost, the warranty position and the software that comes installed.

People look at China-market laptops for choice. Lenovo, Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor and MECHREVO sell configurations in China that never reach Pakistani shops, often at a lower price than the nearest local equivalent. Whether that saving survives duty and the warranty gap is the question.

Does a laptop need PTA registration?

No. PTA's DIRBS system covers devices that connect to a mobile network with a SIM, which is why phones need registration. A standard Wi-Fi laptop has no IMEI and nothing to register. The one exception to watch is a laptop with a built-in 4G or 5G modem and SIM slot. Those have an IMEI and may fall under PTA rules, so check with PTA before ordering that variant. For the ordinary Wi-Fi model, there is no PTA step at all.

What customs duty applies to a laptop?

Pakistan charges customs duty by HS code, plus additional customs duty, sales tax at the standard rate and advance income tax, all on the customs value, which is the invoice price plus freight and insurance. Customs also applies valuation rulings to many electronics, meaning they may assess a minimum value regardless of what you paid. The combined cost on imported goods commonly lands between 25 and 60 percent of customs value, and laptops sit in their own slab within that structure. Rates move with each budget, so confirm the current figure before you commit. Our customs duty guide explains how the stack is calculated.

There is no duty-free allowance for a parcel. A laptop arriving by courier or air freight is assessed like any other import, whoever it is for.

Is the battery a problem for shipping?

Not when it is inside the laptop. Carriers treat a laptop as a device with a contained battery, and it ships by air on standard lines. A spare battery packed loose, or a bundled power bank, is a standalone lithium battery and is restricted by air. Order the laptop alone with its charger. Door to door by air typically takes 7 to 15 days after the seller dispatches.

What about the warranty?

Assume the warranty is Chinese only. A laptop bought on JD, Taobao or 1688 carries the manufacturer's China warranty, which is honoured at service centres in China. Pakistani distributors of the same brand generally decline grey-market machines, or treat them as out-of-warranty paid repairs. Some brands offer international warranty on specific lines; confirm it for the exact model in writing before buying. The practical position is that a fault after arrival is your cost to fix. For a high-value machine, that risk is the main argument for buying locally instead.

Keyboard layout and Chinese Windows

This catches more buyers than duty does. China-market laptops commonly ship with a Chinese single-language edition of Windows. The display language cannot simply be switched to English in settings on that edition. You need a different Windows edition, which can mean a licence cost, or a clean reinstall. Ask the seller which edition is installed before you order. Some sellers offer a global or English edition, or a model without an operating system.

The physical keyboard is usually a US layout with Latin letters, so typing in English is fine. A few models add Chinese characters on the keycaps or use a slightly different layout. Pre-installed Chinese apps, a Chinese Microsoft account region and Chinese keyboard input defaults are normal and can be removed or changed, but budget an evening for setup.

What commonly goes wrong?

  • Wrong variant. The listing shows a 16 GB model and the seller sends 8 GB because the SKU was not specified.
  • Refurbished sold as new. Cheap listings for last year's flagship are often used stock with a new shell. Customs may also assess used electronics at a higher value or refuse them.
  • Dead on arrival. With a China-only warranty and no return route, a fault at delivery is hard to resolve. Ask the seller to confirm their own after-sales terms in writing.
  • Exchange rate drift. Sellers price in RMB, so a rupee quote that sits for a week can move. Pay promptly.

How does a single-item service handle a laptop?

You send the product link on WhatsApp with the exact configuration you want. Within 24 hours you get one price in rupees that covers the laptop, air shipping, Pakistan customs and our fee, which is stated upfront. You pay once, before it ships, and it is delivered to your address in 7 to 15 days after the seller dispatches, with nothing to pay at the door. We handle one laptop per order, not stock for resale. Frequently asked questions

Do I need PTA approval to import a laptop into Pakistan?

No. PTA registration applies to devices with a SIM and IMEI, such as phones. A standard Wi-Fi laptop needs no PTA step. Only laptops with a built-in cellular modem might, so check that variant with PTA.

Can a laptop be shipped by air from China because of the battery?

Yes. A battery built into the laptop is accepted on normal air routes. Loose spare batteries and power banks are restricted, so order the laptop alone.

Is customs duty charged on one laptop from China?

Yes. Duty, additional duty, sales tax and advance income tax are charged on the customs value. There is no duty-free threshold for parcels. Confirm the current rate because it changes with budgets.

Will the warranty work in Pakistan?

Usually not. China-market laptops carry a China-only warranty and Pakistani service centres generally treat them as paid repairs. Confirm international warranty for the exact model before buying.

Can I change Chinese Windows to English?

Not on the Chinese single-language edition without changing edition or reinstalling. Ask the seller for an English or global edition, or a model with no operating system, before you order.
