Importing a Musical Instrument From China to Pakistan

Quick answer

A single musical instrument from China is a realistic import to Pakistan. Pedals, ukuleles, small MIDI controllers and accessories are light and easy. Guitars and keyboards are possible but long cartons push up air freight and they need careful packing and a local setup on arrival. Built-in rechargeable batteries ship by air normally. Expect 7 to 15 days door to door and no warranty support in Pakistan.

Why buy a musical instrument from China?

China makes a large share of the world's entry and mid-level instruments, and many Chinese brands now sell under their own names at prices well below what the same quality costs in Pakistan, where the selection in music shops is narrow. Buyers import because they want a specific model, a left-handed version, a particular colour or pickup configuration, or simply a better instrument for the money than the local shop stocks.

Which instruments are easy to import as a single item?

  • Effects pedals and multi-effects units. Small, dense, well packed. Chinese brands such as Mooer, Joyo, NUX, Donner and Flamma sell openly.
  • Ukuleles. Light and short, usually come with a gig bag.
  • MIDI controllers and small keyboards up to about 49 keys.
  • Audio interfaces, portable recorders and microphones.
  • Accessories. Strings, capos, tuners, straps, cables, picks, drum sticks and practice pads.
  • Electronic drum pads and practice kits in compact form.
  • Harmonicas, kalimbas, flutes and other small instruments.

Which instruments are possible but harder?

InstrumentMain issueWhat to expect
Electric guitar or bassLong carton, about 110 cm; volumetric weight; neck fragilityDoable; freight is a noticeable part of the price; needs setup on arrival
Acoustic guitarLarger body, more fragile, humidity sensitiveDoable with a hard case; higher freight; check for cracks on arrival
Full-size 88-key keyboard or digital pianoVery long and heavy cartonExpensive by air; sometimes not worth it as one unit
Violin, violaFragile; set-up mattersFine in a hard case; usually needs bridge and string adjustment locally
Acoustic drum kitSeveral heavy boxesNot a single-item import; buy locally
AmplifiersHeavy; check voltageSmall practice amps are fine; large combos are heavy

How does size affect the cost?

Air freight is charged on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher, and volumetric weight is length times width times height in centimetres divided by 6000. A guitar carton of roughly 110 by 45 by 15 cm works out to about 12 kg volumetric even though the guitar weighs 4 kg. That is what you pay freight on. A pedal in a small box is charged on its real weight. This is why pedals and ukuleles are such easy imports and why an 88-key keyboard often is not. What about batteries and power?

  • Instruments and pedals with built-in rechargeable batteries, such as mini amps, wireless systems and some keyboards, ship by air normally.
  • Loose spare batteries and power banks are restricted by air. Do not add them to the order.
  • Power adapters. Pakistan is 220 to 240V 50Hz. Chinese 220V adapters work with a plug adapter. Avoid 110V US-market versions, which need a converter. Many pedals use a 9V centre-negative supply that you can buy locally.

How do I protect the instrument in transit?

  • Ask the seller for a hard case or at least a padded gig bag and a double-walled carton. Say in writing that the item is fragile and travelling internationally.
  • For guitars, ask the seller to loosen the strings slightly before packing to reduce neck stress.
  • Ask for photos of the instrument and the packing before dispatch. The seller can provide these.
  • Expect the instrument to need a setup on arrival: action, intonation and sometimes a truss rod adjustment after weeks in changing humidity. A local guitar technician does this cheaply.

What about humidity and climate?

Instruments travel from humid southern China through aircraft holds to Pakistan's dry winters or humid monsoon months. Solid wood acoustics and violins are the most affected. Let the instrument rest in its case for a day at room temperature before playing, check for cracks and lifting bridges, and consider a case humidifier in dry months in Lahore, Islamabad or Quetta. Laminated bodies and electric instruments are far less sensitive.

What about counterfeits and duty?

A "Fender" or "Gibson" at a tenth of the price on Taobao or 1688 is a replica, and Pakistan Customs seizes counterfeits. Buy genuine Chinese brands under their own names. For duty, musical instruments have their own tariff lines and customs duty, additional customs duty, sales tax and advance income tax commonly add 25 to 60 percent of the customs value. Rates change with budgets and SROs, so confirm the current figure or get a delivered price. How customs duty is calculated explains it.

How do I order one instrument from China?

Send us the product link on WhatsApp. Within 24 hours we send one price in rupees covering the instrument, air shipping, Pakistan customs and our fee, stated upfront. For a long or heavy item we tell you plainly if the freight makes it a poor deal. You pay once, before it ships, and the instrument arrives at your door in 7 to 15 days after dispatch, with nothing to pay on delivery. One instrument per order, not shop stock. Frequently asked questions

Can I import a guitar from China to Pakistan?

Yes. A single guitar ships by air in a long carton, which raises the freight because of volumetric weight. Ask for a hard case or padded bag and expect to need a setup on arrival.

Are effects pedals easy to import?

Yes. Pedals are small and dense, so freight is low, and Chinese pedal brands sell under their own names. A 9V supply can be bought locally.

Will a Chinese keyboard's power adapter work in Pakistan?

If it is a 220V adapter, yes, with a plug adapter. Avoid 110V US-market versions, which need a voltage converter.

Is there a warranty on an instrument imported from China?

In practice, no. The seller's warranty would mean shipping it back to China. Treat the purchase as final and choose a rated seller.

How long does an instrument take to arrive from China?

By air, commonly 7 to 15 days door to door after the seller dispatches, including customs.
