What Is a Landed Price? (For One Item From China to Pakistan)

Quick answer

A landed price, also called landed cost, is the full amount it costs to get an item from the seller to your door, with nothing left to pay. For one item from China to Pakistan it includes the product price, shipping inside China, international freight, insurance, Pakistan customs duty and taxes, clearance and handling, local delivery and any service fee. A proper quote should be one rupee figure, because any cost left out becomes a surprise bill later.

What does landed price mean?

Landed price is the total cost of a product once it has "landed" at its final destination and is in your hands, with nothing more to pay. Businesses use the term to compare suppliers in different countries fairly, because a cheap product with expensive shipping and high duty can land at a higher cost than a dearer product nearby. For an individual in Pakistan buying one item from China, the idea is the same. The number that matters is not what the listing says. It is what you have paid in total by the time the parcel is in your home.

What goes into the landed price of one item from China?

  • Product price as listed, in RMB or USD, for the exact variant.
  • Domestic shipping in China from the seller to the forwarder's or agent's warehouse. Often free for consumer listings, sometimes not.
  • International freight to Pakistan, by air for a single item. Priced by actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher.
  • Insurance, if any, against loss or damage in transit.
  • Customs duty based on the item's HS/PCT code and its customs value.
  • Other import taxes: additional customs duty, regulatory duty where listed, sales tax and advance income tax.
  • Clearance and handling charges from whoever files the declaration and moves the parcel through customs.
  • Local delivery within Pakistan to your address.
  • Payment costs such as currency conversion and foreign transaction fees if you pay a Chinese seller yourself.
  • Service fee if an agent or import service handles the order.

Why is the listing price so far from the landed price?

Because the listing price is only the first line. A light gadget can cost more to ship by courier than it costs to buy. Pakistan's import taxes combined are commonly 25 to 60 percent of the customs value, and the customs value is the CIF value, meaning the item plus freight plus insurance, not just the item. Customs also applies valuation rulings, which set minimum values for many goods, so a very cheap invoice does not always reduce the tax. Add handling and delivery and it is normal for the landed price to be well above the figure on the screen. None of this is a scam. It is just that most of the cost sits after the checkout button.

Why should a quote be one number?

Because every line that is left out of a quote is a bill you have not agreed to. A quote that says "item PKR X, shipping to be confirmed, duty as applicable" is not a landed price. It is a starting point, and the missing parts are usually the largest. One number means the person quoting has taken on the risk of the freight weight, the tariff classification and the exchange rate, and you can decide yes or no with full information. This is also why delivered duty paid, or DDP, is the right shipping term for a single-item buyer. Our guide Incoterms for single-item buyers explains those terms in plain words.

How do customs duties affect the landed price in Pakistan?

More than most buyers expect. Customs duty depends on the HS/PCT code, with slabs commonly at 0, 3, 11, 16 and 20 percent and higher on some goods. On top come additional customs duty, typically 2 to 7 percent, regulatory duty on some listed goods, 18 percent sales tax and advance income tax. Rates change with the federal budget and SROs, so the current rate always needs checking. Goods with a valid Chinese Certificate of Origin can get reduced customs duty under the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement, although sales tax and income tax still apply. For how the calculation works, see customs duty from China to Pakistan.

How does the exchange rate affect it?

Sellers price in RMB or USD. A rupee landed price is only valid at the exchange rate on the day it is calculated. If you delay payment and the rupee moves, the price can move with it. A fair quote states how long it is valid. When you pay a Chinese seller with your own card, the conversion happens at your bank's rate plus a fee, and you only see the final rupee figure on your statement, which is another reason the landed price is hard to know in advance when buying direct.

How do I get a landed price for one item?

Either work it out yourself, line by line, using the seller's shipping estimate and the tariff for your HS code, or ask someone to quote it as a single figure. We do the second. Send the product link on WhatsApp and within 24 hours you get one price in rupees that is the landed price for that one item at your address: product, shipping, Pakistan customs and our fee, which we state upfront. You pay once before it ships, and there is nothing to pay on delivery. We quote single items only, not bulk. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between landed price and landed cost?

Nothing meaningful. Both mean the total cost of an item delivered to its final destination with all freight, duties, taxes and fees included.

Does landed price include customs duty?

Yes. If a quote excludes duty or says duty is payable on arrival, it is not a landed price.

Is the customs value the same as the item price?

No. Pakistan Customs uses the CIF value, which is item plus freight plus insurance, and may apply a valuation ruling that sets a minimum value for that type of goods.

Why do landed prices change between quote and payment?

Because sellers price in RMB or USD and the rupee rate moves. A quote should state how long it is valid.

Can I calculate a landed price myself?

Yes, if you know the weight, the shipping rate, the HS code and the current duty and tax rates. Most single-item buyers find it easier to ask for one delivered price.
