Trade Assurance is Alibaba.com's built-in payment protection. You pay Alibaba, not the supplier, and the money is released to the supplier only after you confirm the goods arrived as agreed or the dispute window closes. From Pakistan you can pay with a Visa or Mastercard that has international transactions enabled, or by bank transfer. It covers late shipment and goods that differ from the order. It does not cover customs duty, courier charges or returns.
What is Alibaba Trade Assurance?
Trade Assurance is the order and payment system built into Alibaba.com. When you place a Trade Assurance order, the supplier writes the product details, quantity, price and shipping date into an online contract, and you pay Alibaba rather than the supplier. Alibaba holds the money and releases it to the supplier after you confirm receipt, or after the confirmation window passes without a dispute. It is an escrow in plain terms. It only applies to orders placed and paid inside Alibaba.com. If a supplier asks you to pay by Western Union or to a personal account to "save fees", you are outside Trade Assurance and have no protection.
What does Trade Assurance cover?
- Shipping on time. If the supplier does not ship by the date written in the order, you can claim a refund.
- Product as agreed. If what arrives does not match the quality, specification or quantity written in the order, you can dispute for a refund or partial refund.
- Payment security. Your card details go to Alibaba's payment processor, not to the supplier.
The important words are "written in the order". Trade Assurance protects what the contract says, not what you discussed in chat. If the colour, material or model number is not in the order details, ask the supplier to add it before you pay.
What does Trade Assurance not cover?
- Customs duty, sales tax and clearance fees in Pakistan. These are yours regardless.
- Courier charges once the goods have shipped, including return shipping if you want to send something back.
- Problems you discover after confirming receipt or after the dispute window has closed, which at the time of writing is commonly 30 days after delivery for most orders.
- Goods that match the order but are not what you hoped, such as a product that works but feels cheaper than the photos suggested.
- Items stopped or seized by customs because they are restricted or counterfeit. That is an import problem, not a supplier problem.
- Off-platform deals. Anything paid outside Alibaba.
How do I pay with Trade Assurance from Pakistan?
- Ask the supplier to send a Trade Assurance order, or click "Start order" on a Ready to Ship listing.
- Check every line of the order: product, variant, quantity, unit price, shipping method, shipping cost and ship-by date.
- Choose a payment method. For a single item, a Visa or Mastercard is the practical choice. Enable international transactions with your bank first, or the payment fails. Bank transfer (T/T) to Alibaba's account is also offered but involves outward remittance paperwork at a Pakistani bank and is slow for a small order.
- Pay. The payment is made in USD or another foreign currency, so your bank converts it at its rate plus a foreign transaction fee.
- Track the order inside Alibaba. Do not click "Confirm receipt" until you have the goods and have checked them.

How does a Trade Assurance dispute work?
Open the dispute from the order page before the window closes. State the problem, choose the refund you want, and upload evidence: photos or video of the goods, the packaging and the shipping label, plus any chat where the supplier agreed to a specification. The supplier responds and can accept, reject or counter-offer. If you cannot agree, you escalate and Alibaba's team reviews the evidence and decides. Decisions take days to weeks. Partial refunds are more common than full refunds for quality issues. A full refund with no return is more likely when the item is clearly different from what was ordered or did not arrive.
Covered or not? Common single-item situations
| Situation | Trade Assurance | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier never ships | Covered | Claim a full refund after the ship-by date |
| Wrong colour or model arrives | Covered if the variant is in the order | Dispute with photos of the item and label |
| Item arrives broken | Usually covered | Dispute quickly with unboxing photos |
| Courier bills duty and taxes | Not covered | Pay the courier; this is normal import cost |
| Customs seizes a replica | Not covered | Nothing; avoid branded goods |
| You paid the supplier directly by wire | Not covered | Nothing through Alibaba |
| You confirmed receipt, then found a fault | Not covered | Ask the supplier directly; no guarantee |
Does Trade Assurance work for a single-piece order?
Yes. There is no minimum order value for Trade Assurance. It applies to a one-piece Ready to Ship order in the same way as a container. For a Pakistani buyer purchasing one higher-value item, such as a machine, an instrument or specialist electronics, it is the main reason to buy on Alibaba.com rather than on a site with weaker protection. Read can you buy just one item on Alibaba from Pakistan for how to find those listings.
How does this compare with buying through a service?
With Trade Assurance you hold the protection in your own name, and you also hold the costs it does not cover: courier shipping, the duty bill on arrival and the paperwork. With a single-item import service, we buy from the seller using our own accounts, so if a seller fails to ship, that is between us and the seller, not you. You pay one price in rupees that already includes the item, shipping, Pakistan customs and our fee, stated upfront, and you pay it once before the item ships. Anything the seller gets wrong is taken up with the seller on your behalf afterwards, much as a dispute would be. Which route is safer for you depends on the item. Frequently asked questions
Is Alibaba Trade Assurance available in Pakistan?
Yes. Any buyer with an Alibaba.com account can place a Trade Assurance order. Pakistani buyers usually pay with a Visa or Mastercard that has international transactions enabled.
Does Trade Assurance cover customs duty in Pakistan?
No. Duty, sales tax and courier clearance fees are the buyer's cost and are not refundable through Alibaba.
How long do I have to open a Trade Assurance dispute?
At the time of writing, commonly up to 30 days after delivery for most orders, and before you confirm receipt. Check the window shown on your order page, as terms change.
Can I get a refund without returning the item?
Sometimes. Full refunds without return are more likely when the item did not arrive or is clearly different from the order. For quality complaints, partial refunds are more common.
Is paying a supplier directly cheaper than Trade Assurance?
The supplier may offer a small discount, but you lose all protection. For a buyer in Pakistan with no way to visit the supplier, that trade is not worth it.
