How to Search Taobao and 1688 by Image and Find It Cheaper

Why search by image instead of text?

Taobao and 1688 are in Chinese, and text search in English returns almost nothing useful. Even a correct Chinese translation can miss, because sellers title listings with marketing words rather than the plain product name. A photo skips all that. The apps match the shape, colour and pattern of the product against millions of listing images and return the closest matches. For generic goods such as gadgets, accessories, home items, bags and clothing, image search usually finds the exact factory product or a near-identical one within seconds. It is the fastest way for a Pakistani buyer to see what an item really costs in China.

How do I search Taobao by image?

1. Install the Taobao app (淘宝). Browsing works without an account in many regions, though some features prompt you to log in. At the time of writing, the web version also offers image search when you are logged in.
2. Tap the search bar at the top. On the right of the bar there is a small camera icon. This feature is called 拍立淘 (Pailitao).
3. Choose a photo from your gallery or take one.
4. Drag the box to frame only the product, then wait for results.
5. Sort by 销量 (sales) to see the most-bought version, or by 价格 (price) to see the cheapest.

How do I search 1688 by image?

1. Install the 1688 app (阿里巴巴 1688). Registration needs a Chinese number, but browsing and image search commonly work without logging in.
2. Tap the camera icon in the search bar and upload the photo.
3. Results show wholesale listings with a 起批量 (minimum batch) and a price ladder. Look for 1件起批 (from one piece) if you want a single item.
4. Open a result and tap the seller name to see how long they have been on the platform and their repeat buyer rate.

How do I get better results from image search?

• Crop tightly. Remove hands, text overlays, watermarks and background. The product should fill the frame.
• Use the seller's own photo from AliExpress, Daraz or Amazon rather than a lifestyle shot. Listing photos are often the same images the Chinese factory supplied.
• Try several angles. A front view and a side view can return different sellers.
• Copy the Chinese title of a good result and paste it into normal text search. That often surfaces more sellers of the identical item at different prices.
• Note the specifications in the result, such as dimensions, wattage or material, and compare them with the original.

What if image search finds nothing?

• Google Translate. Type the plain product name in English, translate to Chinese (Simplified), and paste it into the Taobao or 1688 search bar. Keep it short: "wireless mechanical keyboard" works better than a full sentence.
• Google Lens. Search the photo in Google Lens to learn the product's generic name or model number, then translate that.
• AliExpress image search. The AliExpress app also has a camera icon. Find the item there, note the title and store name, then search 1688 for the same words. Many AliExpress stores are the retail front of a 1688 supplier.
• Alibaba.com image search. Useful for equipment and tools. The supplier found there often has a 1688 shop under the same company name.
• Send the photo to an agent. An agent who reads Chinese can usually find it in minutes.

How do I tell if it is really the same item?

Image search finds lookalikes as well as originals. Before you treat a cheaper listing as the same product, compare the specifications line by line: size in cm, weight, material, capacity, wattage, included accessories and the number of pieces in the pack. Zoom into detail photos for ports, stitching, logos and buttons. Read reviews with photos, where buyers show what actually arrived. If the original is a branded product and the Chinese listing has the brand name at a fraction of the price, it is a replica, and Pakistan Customs will seize it. If specifications match and the seller has strong sales, it is probably the same factory output.
